I take this opportunity to extend my heartiest welcome to the distinguished delegates from across the globe to 56 th meeting of ISO/TC 61 being held in Goa, India. We are proud to host this prestigious event, which is being held for the first time in India.
With opening of the trade barriers and advent of free trade agreements amongst nations, the need for International standards are paramount. Although each country has evolved its own standards, a code, with worldwide acceptance can be guaranteed if there is an ISO Standard. Harmonization of National standards under the aegis of ISO is thus beneficial in terms of facilitating trade and services. Increasing number of standards prepared by ISO/TC 61 Committee indicate rapid growth of the plastics industry across the World. India is an active participant in various TC 61 Committees in formulating the standards and our delegates have regularly attended the meetings held in various countries.
Indian economy has been performing exceptionally over the years. It has emerged as the 2 nd fastest growing economy with GDP growth of more than 8% per annum. Galloping per capita income, demographics with bulging working age group, superior intellectual capital and factor cost competitiveness has transformed India into an “Outsourcing Haven”. Simultaneously, the Indian manufacturing sector has shown robust bottom-line growth. Indian Plastic Industry too has matched this trend and set to emerge as the third largest globally over next five years.
I would also welcome you to the rich cultural heritage of India. To make this event memorable we have chosen the State of Goa. It has been a true example of synthesis of oriental and western cultures. The State exhibits a unique blend of Indian traditions, religious diversity and hospitality. It has enchanting sea beaches and multireligious monuments and historical sites, I am sure you will enjoy your stay in Goa.
I hope that many of the unfinished tasks of ISO/TC 61 will be taken to their logical conclusion and many more new work items will be identified during the course of this meet.
Once again on behalf of my entire team I extend you a warm welcome and wish the 56 th meeting of ISO/TC 61 in India a great success. |
